Mrs. Benish

English II and English II Pre-AP:

This one-year English II course is designed to give students experience with various styles of essays that will help them in college or in a career outside of high school.  They will read and discuss essay models by various authors and write numerous formal and informal essays. Simultaneously, students will study grammar as well as read, discuss, and write about drama, poetry, short stories, and novels from ancient to modern times.

Film-Media Literacy:

This one-semester Language Arts course has emerged as a result of the need to strengthen students’ writing, reading, listening, and viewing skills in responding to TV news, advertising, film, popular culture, and print media.  The term “media literacy” is loosely defined as “the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and communicate messages in a wide variety of forms,” and the course is designed to use visual, digital, mass media, and popular culture texts in the classroom to promote critical thinking and communication skills.  This course provides students with the opportunity to develop proficient to advanced levels of media literacy through critically analyzing media texts by employing a simple and clear set of concepts (the key media literacy questions) in analytical writing, creative projects, and formal presentations.  Media Literacy builds an understanding of the role of media in society as well as essential skills of inquiry and self-expression necessary for citizens of a democracy.
