Website Description:
This website is one of the tools the modern student has to help him or her be successful in my English classes. It is NOT a substitute for attending class, or talking directly with me, or taking notes in class, or keeping track of handouts and announcements, or any of the many other behaviors that produce a quality education. It is, however, a useful device by which an enterprising student can keep track of upcoming assignments, tests, class projects, and so forth. I will also be posting helpful handouts and supplemental material to this site for any student who might need them. Much like any other tool, this website is not useful when left in the toolbox; it is only useful to the degree that a student accesses it and makes use of it.
English IV is a one-year senior English class which must be successfully completed in order for a senior to graduate. The course is primarily a writing course designed to give students experience with various kinds of writings that will help them in college or in a career outside of high school. Students will read and discuss essay models by various authors, write numerous journal entries, and confer with classmates and teacher during informal evaluations before submitting a final writing. At the same time, students will participate in a survey of modern world literature with a focus on the things shared by all cultures. Students will read, discuss, and write about drama, poetry, short stories, and novels.
IB English III is the first year of the International Baccalaureate's English A1 HL, a college-level two-year literature course that encompasses the student's junior and senior years. The course is international in scope and features literature from English and non-English speaking cultures. A successful student will demonstrate mastery of critical thinking, critical writing, and critical speaking that will prepare him for the IB examinations and papers. IB English III covers IB Parts One and Four, and will include the IB required Individual Oral Presentation and World Literature Assignment One. During the course of study, I will evaluate students through formal critical essays, objective quizzes and exams, individual and group presentations, informal journal keeping, and informal and formal class disscussion. In this course, we will approach literature as a cultural, political, and social phenomenon that crosses language barriers and which emphasizes the human qualities in us all.
Media Literacy is an elective course that was developed in response to the need to strengthen students’ writing, reading, listening, and viewing skills in responding to TV news, advertising, film, popular culture, and print media. The term “media literacy” is loosely defined as “the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and communicate messages in a wide variety of forms,” and the course is designed to use visual, digital, mass media, and popular culture texts in the classroom to promote critical thinking and communication skills. This course provides students with the opportunity to develop proficient to advanced levels of media literacy through critically analyzing media texts by employing a simple and clear set of concepts (the key media literacy questions) in analytical writing, creative projects, and formal presentations. Media Literacy builds an understanding of the role of media in society as well as essential skills of inquiry and self-expression necessary for citizens of a democracy.
