 Bentonville Special Olympics

Bentonville Special Olympics promotes building self-esteem for the "special needs” child.  Being able to succeed, even with a handicap, is essential to building self-esteem.  These athletes do not need to win all the time, they just love to participate and have fun.  Bentonville Special Olympics has about 50 active participants.  The program is designed to integrate our special athletes with non-handicapped peers.  Special Olympics training and competition always involves persons from within the community, thus integrating Special Olympics athletes to the community and sports.

The athlete is all-important.  Developing the physical, social, intellectual and spiritual qualities of the participants underlies everything that is done in the Special Olympics program.  It is not enough to merely introduce many different sports to special athletes.  It is critical that parents and coaches make every effort to encourage and provide athletes with opportunities to reach their highest level of athletic achievement.  Experiencing new and higher levels of athletic achievement require a commitment from parents, coaches and athletes.  This commitment enhances the sense of reward athletes receive from participating in Special Olympics.
